As I stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in my favorite peach-colored robe, the glint of the diamond ring on the vanity table caught my eye. Just two weeks ago, Felix, my long-time boyfriend, had proposed, and I had said yes, envisioning a beautiful future together. I slid the ring onto my finger, a wide smile spreading across my face. My phone rang, interrupting my moment of bliss. It was Ashley, reminding me about our planned bridal shower at the 24-night club. I quickly got dressed and made my way there, excited to celebrate my last night of freedom with my friends. At the club, the music was pumping, the lights were flashing, and everyone was dancing. The next morning, I woke up with a throbbing headache from the previous night's celebration. But the excitement of getting married overshadowed the discomfort. My mother, Kiara, was there to help me get ready. I designed my own wedding dress, a masterpiece that I was proud to wear. As I stood in front of the mirror, admiring the dress, I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.
The wedding venue was filled with our friends and family. Felix and I stood facing each other, ready to exchange our vows. The priest asked Felix if he would take me as his wife, and he said yes. When it was my turn to answer, a sound that chilled me to the bone filled the air. It was the sound of Felix having sex with Felicia, my workmate, playing on the projector. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears. The man I loved, the man I was about to marry, had betrayed me.
I felt my world crashing down around me. I slapped Felix, threw my wedding ring on the floor, and ran out of the venue. I was in such a daze that I didn't even care about the cars on the road. I just wanted to disappear. That's when I encountered Mason. His car almost hit me, but I didn't flinch. I told him I wanted to die, and he told me his fiancée had stood him up. Then, he proposed an unthinkable idea – that we should get married.
At first, I thought he was crazy. But as I looked into his eyes, I saw a glimmer of understanding, a shared pain. In that moment, I realized that life had thrown us both a curveball. Maybe, just maybe, getting married to a stranger was the craziest and yet the most liberating thing I could do. And so, with a mix of hesitation and determination, I considered his proposal, ready to embark on a journey that I could never have imagined.
