The atmosphere in the room was thick with tension as I stared at the man who now stood before me. His presence filled the space, making it seem smaller and more confining. I couldn't believe that it was the same old man I had helped at the market. How had we come to this point?
He looked at me with an unreadable expression, his eyes seeming to search my face for something. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I tried to avoid his gaze. My mind was racing with a thousand thoughts. What did he want from me? What had happened to my grandpa? And most importantly, how was I going to get out of this situation?
"Do you remember me?" he asked, his voice low and smooth, yet it held a certain edge that made me even more nervous.
I nodded slowly, not trusting my voice to speak. I was still in shock from the events that had unfolded so quickly. One moment I was at the market, buying fruits for my grandpa, and the next I was here, in this strange mansion, facing a man who seemed to hold my fate in his hands.
He smiled, but it wasn't a warm or friendly smile. It was a smile that sent a chill through me, making me wonder what was going on inside his head. "Good," he said. "Then you know that I am a man of my word."
I had no idea what he meant by that, but I didn't like the sound of it. I opened my mouth to ask him about my grandpa, but he held up a hand to stop me. "Your grandpa is fine," he said, as if reading my mind. "For now."
The way he emphasized those last two words made my heart skip a beat. What did he mean by that? Was he threatening my grandpa's life? I felt a surge of anger rise within me. "What do you want from us?" I finally managed to ask, my voice shaking with a mixture of fear and rage.
He sat down in a chair across from me, his eyes never leaving mine. "Your grandpa owes me a great debt," he said calmly. "And I have come to collect."
"But 100 million dollars?" I exclaimed. "How could he possibly owe you that much?"
He shrugged. "Business dealings," he said simply. "Your grandpa made some bad decisions, and now he has to pay the price."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My grandpa was a kind and honest man. He would never get involved in something that would lead to such a huge debt. There had to be a mistake. "There's been a misunderstanding," I said firmly. "My grandpa would never do something like that."
He laughed, a cold and mirthless laugh. "You're a naive little girl," he said. "You have no idea what your grandpa has been up to."
I wanted to argue with him, to tell him that he was wrong, but I knew it would be useless. He clearly had his own version of events, and he wasn't going to listen to me. "What are you going to do to him?" I asked instead, my voice barely above a whisper.
He leaned back in his chair, considering me for a moment. "That depends on you," he said finally.
"On me?" I repeated, confused. "What do you mean?"
He stood up and began to pace the room, his steps slow and deliberate. "I have a proposition for you," he said. "A way for you to pay off your grandpa's debt."
I looked at him warily. I didn't trust him, but I was desperate to help my grandpa. "What kind of proposition?" I asked.
He stopped pacing and turned to face me. "You will marry my son," he said.
I stared at him in disbelief. Marry his son? How could that possibly solve anything? "I don't understand," I said. "How will that pay off the debt?"
He smiled again, that same cold smile. "My son is a valuable asset," he said. "And his marriage will bring certain benefits that will more than cover the debt."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was insane. I couldn't just marry someone I didn't know to pay off a debt. "I can't do that," I said firmly. "I have a boyfriend. I love him."
He laughed again, this time louder. "Your boyfriend?" he said scornfully. "Do you really think he can protect you from me? From my family?"
I knew he was right. Caleb was a nice guy, but he had no idea what kind of world I was now involved in. He couldn't protect me from these people. But that didn't mean I was going to give in so easily. "I won't do it," I said, trying to sound more confident than I felt.
His expression hardened. "You don't have a choice," he said. "If you don't marry my son, your grandpa will suffer the consequences."
I felt a lump form in my throat. I couldn't let anything happen to my grandpa. But I also couldn't just sacrifice my own happiness like this. There had to be another way. "Please," I begged. "There has to be something else we can do."
He shook his head. "There is no other way," he said. "You have until tomorrow to make your decision."
With that, he turned and left the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I sat there for a long time, trying to figure out what to do. I knew that I couldn't let my grandpa down, but I also couldn't bear the thought of marrying a stranger. As I sat there, tears began to stream down my face. I was trapped, and I didn't see any way out.
