Synopsis of the Novel
Elsie entered into marriage with Godfrey with beautiful expectations for it. However, fate played a cruel joke on her when she suffered a miscarriage. During the follow-up examination three weeks after the operation, which was supposed to be a moment when Godfrey offered her support and company, he left in a hurry. While waiting at the hospital, Elsie witnessed Godfrey's car parked at the entrance and a woman in a white dress getting out of it. And this woman was none other than Sirena, Godfrey's first love. Sirena flaunted on social media how well Godfrey took care of her, which made Elsie gradually realize that she might just be a substitute in Godfrey's heart.
After that, Elsie no longer took meticulous care of Godfrey's daily life as she used to. Faced with his complaints about breakfast, ironing clothes and other trifles, she chose to be indifferent. When an opportunity for overseas training came up at work, Elsie readily accepted it, trying to break free from the shackles of this painful marriage. Meanwhile, Godfrey was getting deeper and deeper into the emotional entanglement with Sirena. He even went on a trip to Chicago with her, and all of these were noticed by Elsie, who then took off her wedding ring.
On their wedding anniversary, Godfrey suddenly showed up and wanted to save their relationship. He took Elsie to a luxurious restaurant and promised to cut off contact with Sirena. But just at this seemingly turning point, Godfrey's phone rang, and it was something related to Sirena again, plunging this already shaky marriage into an unknown abyss once more.
Analysis of the Main Characters
Elsie
Deep Affection, Blind Devotion and Subsequent Awakening: At first, Elsie's love for Godfrey was deep and persistent. Despite knowing that she might be a substitute for Sirena, she still resolutely walked into the marriage because of her deep love. In daily life, she took care of every detail for Godfrey, from carefully preparing breakfast every day to ironing his work clothes in advance. Even when Godfrey was ill, she braved wind and rain to bring him medicine. Such unreserved dedication demonstrated her blind and persistent love.
Sensitivity, Vulnerability and the Pursuit of Independence: The trauma of the miscarriage and Godfrey's ambiguous relationship with Sirena dealt a heavy blow to her heart, making her sensitive and vulnerable. She began to doubt and be disappointed in this marriage. Her previous dependence and expectation gradually disappeared, replaced by indifference and alienation. She no longer took the initiative to cater to Godfrey's needs, which was her self-protection after being hurt. And when the opportunity for overseas training came, she didn't hesitate to seize it, marking her awakening from the pain and starting to focus on her own growth and independence. She was no longer willing to continue to be trapped in an unequal and betrayal-ridden relationship.
Godfrey
Indecisiveness in Emotional Dilemma: Godfrey wavered between Elsie and Sirena, trapped in an emotional mire. He enjoyed Elsie's meticulous care in marriage on the one hand, and on the other hand, he couldn't let go of his first love for Sirena. Whenever Sirena had problems, he always rushed to her without hesitation. Such indecisive behavior not only hurt Elsie but also made him lose his way in the two relationships.
Selfishness, Self-Centeredness and Belated Regret: He took Elsie's efforts for granted and completely ignored Elsie's feelings. For example, when Elsie brought him medicine but was laughed at by his colleagues, instead of comforting her, he blamed Elsie, fully showing his selfishness and self-centeredness. When the marriage was on the rocks and Elsie's attitude towards him changed, he belatedly tried to save it. However, his attempts to make amends were rendered feeble by Sirena's frequent interference, which also reflected his ignorance and misunderstanding of Elsie's inner pain.
