Madeline has her own share of past traumas. As a fatherless pup, she was bullied at school. But one day, a boy with beautiful blue eyes and curly black hair saved her. That encounter left an indelible mark on her heart, and even though she tries to focus on her mother and the financial burdens, the memory of her savior resurfaces whenever the topic of love or mates comes up.

As Madeline's mother's condition deteriorates, she receives a call that shatters her world. Her mother tells her she is leaving, and Madeline is frozen in fear and grief.
