Melaena Blackburn, a 19-year-old young woman, has just returned to San Francisco after a year-long backpacking trip around the world with her friend Kiara. The purpose of this journey was to clear her head and get over Damion Grimm, a boy who has haunted her thoughts and emotions for years.

Since the age of 9, Melaena has had a complex relationship with Damion. Their first encounter was during a cross-country running event near a haunted house. Later, in seventh grade, she had a second "BAM" moment with him when she saw his green eyes again. At first, she thought it was a storybook meet-cute, but it soon turned into a source of intense emotions. Damion befriended her brother Logan and was involved in some events that both helped and hurt Melaena. He gave her his jacket, which she still has, but he also played with her feelings. He took her to the boardwalk, bought her a sea turtle soft-toy named Pan, and they had a great time. However, the next day, she caught him kissing another girl. There was also a secret night at the zoo where Melaena truly fell in love with him, only to be shattered when he showed up with a black eye and another girl the next day.

Now, back in San Francisco and about to move into a townhouse complex built on the site of her childhood home (where her mother was murdered nearly nine years ago), Melaena is faced with the prospect of seeing Damion again. She hates him so much that it makes her sick when he's around, yet she can't stop thinking about him. She believes that the feelings of love and hate are closely related, and her body's reaction to him is a result of chemical imbalances in her hypothalamus.

While Damion is a "player" who seems to have a type for brunettes, Melaena has been on a few dates with Ren. Ren is a nice guy who asked her out and has lasted more than two dates without getting injured like some of her previous suitors. But there are no real sparks between them, and he is already talking about marriage and children, which makes Melaena uncomfortable as she is not ready for such commitments.

As Melaena prepares to face Damion again, she is conflicted. Her mind tells her to stay away, her body has a physical attraction to him, and her heart is just trying to survive the emotional turmoil. With the memories of her past with Damion and the uncertainty of her future with Ren, Melaena is at a crossroads. Will she be able to resist Damion's charm and move on with Ren? Or will her unresolved feelings for Damion continue to complicate her life? The story unfolds as she navigates through the web of love, hate, and confusion。
