Sophia's world is turned upside down when her mother decides to get married and move them across the country. At just sixteen years old, Sophia, a city girl born and raised in LA, is forced to leave behind everything she knows and loves. She's not only losing her familiar city life but also facing the prospect of living with a new stepfather and five stepbrothers she hardly knows.
The day of the wedding arrives, and Sophia reluctantly attends. The ceremony is quick and simple, and before she knows it, she's in a car on the way to her new home. Along the journey, she naps and wakes up disoriented in a strange bed, wearing an oversized T-shirt that's not hers. As she explores her new surroundings, she realizes she's in a mansion with a huge room and an ensuite bathroom - a small consolation.
In the kitchen, she meets her new stepbrothers one by one. Samuel, the youngest and a bit sarcastic, is the first to appear in just a T-shirt and boxers. Alvin and Adam, both tall with tattoos like their father, enter next and share a laugh at Sophia's shirt choice, making her feel self-conscious and on the verge of tears. But then Victor, Adam's twin, steps in with a warm smile and a protective attitude. He welcomes Sophia to the family in a smooth, dominant voice that makes her name sound special. Kyle, the same age as Sophia, shows up later and makes her giggle with a big twirl.
The boys give Sophia a tour of the house, which includes an entertainment room with a bar, pool table, plasma TV, and PlayStation setup, and a backyard that blends into the forest. Sophia is warned not to go into the forest alone. At dinner, while the others have steak, her mother makes chicken nuggets for her, and she eats in silence as the boys talk about school. After dinner, she's sent to bed, and before she sleeps, Sammy and Kyle come to say goodnight, followed by the twins and Alvin, leading to an unexpected but heartwarming display of affection.
The next morning, Sophia prepares for her first day at a new school. She agonizes over her outfit choice, finally settling on high-waisted jeans, a pink T-shirt, and tennis shoes. In the kitchen, she's unable to eat due to nerves, but Victor notices and gets her a glass of orange juice. He then takes her to school on his shiny silver motorcycle, a new and exciting experience for Sophia. She clings to him tightly as they ride, and once at school, he helps her off, fixes her hair, and takes her to get her schedule.
What lies ahead for Sophia in this new town, with her new family and at her new school? Will she be able to adjust and find her place? Or will the challenges prove too much for her? Find out in the full novel as Sophia's journey unfolds.
