Valentina and Lazaro are the main characters in the novel "Mafia Secret". In this novel, the female protagonist, Valentina, is a woman who was groomed to be the perfect mafia wife since childhood. The male protagonist, Lazaro, is a ruthless enforcer for Valentina's father within the mafia clan. "Mafia Secret" tells the story of how Valentina's life takes a dark turn after marrying Lazaro, and the events that lead her to a desperate fight for freedom and her own humanity.
Valentina was born into a powerful New York mafia family. Her mother's successful marriage to one of the most important dons in the city set an example for her. Raised to be the ideal mafia wife, Valentina obediently married Lazaro as arranged by her father. However, she soon discovered that her husband had a terrifying and sadistic side. Lazaro often brought victims to their basement, forcing Valentina to participate in their torture.
During her cousin Belinda's bridal shower, Valentina learned that her sister Gemma was also being forced into an unwanted marriage. This, combined with her own miserable situation, made her more discontented. When Lazaro suddenly summoned her home, she was met with a new horror - a young girl imprisoned in the basement. Learning that the girl was to be "played with" until she was picked up the next day, Valentina's conscience finally snapped.
Determined to save the innocent girl, Valentina found weapons in the basement and shot Lazaro when he returned. She then helped the girl escape, stealing money and her passport from Lazaro's safe. After a series of nerve - wracking moments on the run, they made it to the airport. Valentina bought tickets for both of them to Barcelona, and then decided to head to Ibiza on a whim.
In Ibiza, she checked into a hostel, but her troubles didn't end there. While out shopping, she was robbed, losing her money and leaving her in a desperate situation.
