The story unfolds with Alyssa Carlton, the illegitimate princess of the Blackstone Kingdom, leading a wretched life. Constantly abused by her step - family, she endures physical and verbal torment. Her stepsister Ella, driven by jealousy and hatred, whips her mercilessly, leaving her in a pitiful state. Alyssa's father, the Alpha king, is aware of the abuse but remains indifferent, as she is seen as a stain on his reputation.
One day, Alyssa is suddenly summoned by her father. She is ordered to move back to her proper room, dress up, and attend dinner. At the dinner table, her father drops a bombshell - she is to marry Lucas Brine, the second prince of Sylvia. Alyssa vehemently protests, arguing that her father has no right to decide her life. However, her father gives her a chance to have three dates with Lucas to get to know him better, but marriage is inevitable.
Alyssa meets Lucas at a high - end restaurant. To her surprise, Lucas immediately recognizes her as his mate. Despite her initial aversion to the arranged marriage, she feels a slight attraction towards him. Lucas, on his part, is determined to win her heart. Their first date involves getting to know each other through conversations, and although Alyssa finds it a bit boring at times, she doesn't hate the interaction.
Back at the palace, the situation is worsening. The king calls an urgent meeting with the elders as the kingdom is facing a severe crisis. It lacks funds and manpower and is at risk of being annexed by another kingdom. The elders are unable to come up with a solution, and the king gives them two days to find one or he will replace them.
Amidst all this, Ella's jealousy reaches a boiling point. She attacks Alyssa again, dunking her head in a tub of water, believing that Alyssa doesn't deserve to marry Lucas. Alyssa tries to explain that she doesn't want the marriage either, but Ella refuses to listen. As the story progresses, Alyssa's future remains uncertain, with the arranged marriage, the kingdom's crisis, and her ongoing abuse all hanging over her head.
