The novel presents a dramatic and emotional story centered around the life of Emerald Morgan, a young woman who has been treated as an outcast by her own family. Born into the Morgan family, Emerald's arrival coincided with her father Emerson Morgan falling victim to a financial scam, which nearly led their family to bankruptcy. To the surprise and dismay of the Morgans, Jace chooses the younger, seemingly plain and unworthy Emerald over the sophisticated and charming Emerose.
Emerald is shocked but hopeful about her new future with Jace. However, their marriage starts off on a rocky note. There is no grand wedding ceremony; instead, they sign documents, making their union legally binding. Upon moving into Jace's mansion, Emerald is tasked with keeping the house clean and preparing meals, all while being subjected to Jace's cold treatment. He makes it clear that he doesn't love her and seems to take pleasure in degrading and humiliating her, especially in intimate situations.
Jace's reasons for marrying Emerald are rooted in revenge. His older brother Jack had been in a relationship with a woman who broke up with him when she discovered that Jack was not as wealthy as she thought. Heartbroken, Jack attempted to take his own life, leaving him paralyzed and in a state of depression. Jace believes that the woman who hurt his brother was Emerald, or at least someone from her family, and he plans to make Emerald suffer for what happened to Jack.
Emerose, envious of Emerald's natural beauty and her marriage to Jace, frequently visits the mansion to further torment her sister. She manipulates situations to make Emerald look bad in front of Jace, such as intentionally hurting herself and blaming Emerald. Jace, already predisposed to dislike Emerald, takes Emerose's side without giving Emerald a chance to explain, deepening Emerald's pain and loneliness.
Throughout the narrative, Emerald struggles with her feelings of worthlessness and the belief that she is a jinx, while also trying to find a way to win Jace's heart and prove her innocence regarding Jack's tragedy. The novel delves into themes of family dynamics, societal expectations, love, betrayal, and the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
