Melanie, a 21-year-old intern nurse, starts her day with the excitement of her birthday. Working at the hospital, she's responsible for the care of eight-year-old Luke, who's recovering from a heart transplant. Their interactions are warm, with Luke showing interest in Melanie's birthday plans.

However, her day takes a drastic turn when she's summoned by Dr. Thompson.
