Stella, a sixteen-year-old girl from the United States, finds her life turned upside down when her family decides to move to Europe. Leaving behind her home, school, and friends, including her best friend Layla, Stella embarks on an uncertain journey with mixed emotions. Accompanied by her younger brother Finn, who tries to stay positive for her sake, and her parents, Stella faces the daunting prospect of starting anew in a foreign country.
Upon arriving at their new home, nestled in a remote, forested area, Stella is immediately struck by the stark contrast between her old life and this new, almost isolated existence. The house, much larger than their previous one, offers some comfort, but the overwhelming sense of being watched and the dense woods surrounding them add an eerie atmosphere to her new environment.
The first day at Saint Louis School, an ancient-looking castle that serves as the local educational institution, proves to be a challenging experience for Stella. Navigating the sprawling, maze-like building, she gets lost and encounters a mysterious figure that sends her into a panic. Despite the initial difficulties, Stella begins to settle in, forming a friendship with Calesti, a fellow student who helps her adjust to the school's unique culture and introduces her to a group of students known as the "Royals."
Among the Royals is Theo, a charming boy who quickly takes an interest in Stella. His attentiveness and concern for her well-being, especially after she faints during a walk home with Finn, lead to a budding romance. However, Stella also feels an inexplicable pull towards another Royal, Milo, whose intense presence and commanding demeanor leave her both intrigued and confused.
As Stella navigates her new life, she grapples with feelings of homesickness, the pressure to fit in, and the strange occurrences that seem to follow her in this unfamiliar place. The woods, the mysterious figures, and the growing connection with Theo and Milo all contribute to a story that blends coming-of-age themes with elements of mystery and supernatural intrigue.
Through her experiences, Stella learns to embrace her new surroundings while discovering more about herself and the people around her. The novel explores themes of identity, belonging, and the challenges of adapting to a new world, all set against the backdrop of a picturesque yet enigmatic European town.
