Joan is facing a difficult situation as her mother is in a coma due to a heart attack and she is broke, having dropped out of school and lost her job. Her friend Bea tells her about a maid position at Derrick Stonewood's household and arranges an interview for her. Joan attends the interview at the luxurious Stonewood Mansion, where she meets the house manager Miss Sullivan and is interviewed by an important man. After the interview, she accidentally bumps into Derrick Stonewood, finding him extremely handsome and feeling a strong attraction to him. She is later hired for the position and starts work the next day.

On her first day, she meets her colleagues Emily and Sarah, with Sarah being initially unfriendly. They work in the large kitchen and prepare to serve Derrick. When serving him, Joan's fingers brush against his, and they have a moment of intense eye contact. Meanwhile, Derrick is unable to focus on his work as he is constantly thinking about Joan. He is both attracted to her and frustrated by his feelings, vowing to avoid women due to past experiences.

In another part of the story, Derrick's men capture Bones, an employee who had betrayed them by running an illegal brothel with underaged boys. Derrick confronts Bones, expressing his disgust and anger. He orders his men to make Bones' death painful and ensures the children are being taken care of and rehabilitated.
