Katie, a seventeen-year-old burdened by a miserable existence with her mother and stepfather, initially welcomes the vampire takeover. When the vampires demand that humans come out of hiding, Katie defiantly stays home, believing she can survive on her own with the ample food and supplies her stepfather had stockpiled. However, she is soon discovered and taken captive by a vampire named William.

After learning of her parents' death, which oddly brings her a sense of relief, Katie is sent to an unknown destination. She finds herself in a strange place, first in a holding cell and then being moved around. Eventually, she ends up in an apartment with other girls and under the care of Evelyn, a vampire with whom she forms an immediate connection.

At the carnival, Katie discovers she belongs to the cgl category, specifically as a "little." While others find their vampire partners, Katie is left with Evelyn. But then, Evelyn leaves her for over a week, causing Katie to feel abandoned once again. In the meantime, Angie gets sick and leaves, and they are left with Wolf, who fails to provide the same comfort.

Three years pass, during which Katie endures loneliness and ridicule at school, being called a baby and told she'll always be alone. But then, Evelyn returns, admitting her heart was broken and realizing she missed Katie. She offers to be Katie's teacher and for them to take care of each other.

As time goes on, Evelyn decides to change Katie into a vampire. After a visit to the hospital and the transformation process, Katie wakes up as a baby vampire. Evelyn lovingly takes on the role of her mommy, doing everything from hugging and feeding her to ensuring her safety. Katie slowly gains strength and starts to grow.

The world is now a different place, with vampires working to clean radiation areas and a new system in place for classifying and educating humans and vampires. The school has expanded, and Katie and Evelyn return, with Katie wearing a blue tie to signify her "little" status.
