The story of a passionate yet complicated romance between Penelope Hampson and Jeremy Gilbert.

Penny, a young artist who earns a living by creating illustrations for children's books, lives in a small, tastefully - decorated flat. Her life takes an exciting turn when she meets Jeremy at a literary cocktail party. Jeremy, the son of a well - known novelist, is immediately attracted to Penny, and it's love at first sight for both of them. Since then, their days have been filled with joy, but a significant issue clouds their relationship.

Four months into their relationship, Jeremy confesses his love for Penny. However, he stops short of proposing marriage. Jeremy is soon to be released from the Air Force and has no civilian job lined up. Although his father has offered him a position in the company, Jeremy, who values independence highly, refuses it. He believes he can't afford to get married yet, which leaves Penny in a state of uncertainty and anxiety.

Penny loves Jeremy deeply, but she is torn between her desire for a committed relationship, preferably marriage, and Jeremy's focus on financial stability and freedom. She often has doubts when they are apart, and their conversations about their future only seem to deepen her confusion. Jeremy wants more physical intimacy, but Penny, who has experienced the loss of her first husband, Howard, in a car accident, is hesitant. She wants a long - term, committed relationship, not just a casual affair.

One day, after a lunch together, Penny returns to her flat feeling lonely and conflicted. Jeremy calls, but she initially ignores the call, afraid that he might ask her to live with him without a promise of marriage. Eventually, Jeremy shows up at her place. Penny finally confesses that she wants to get married first to be sure of their relationship. Jeremy understands her feelings but insists that it's not possible for him to propose marriage at the moment due to his financial situation. He does, however, suggest getting engaged.

Later, they have dinner with Jeremy's father, Mr Gilbert. Mr Gilbert offers to give Jeremy an allowance, which Jeremy firmly refuses, showing his obstinate side. After the dinner, when they return to Penny's flat, the atmosphere between them is charged. Penny, feeling a sense of rightness about Jeremy being in her flat, finally gives in to their passion. Jeremy's actions are rough and desperate, but for Penny, it feels like a real and intense connection, transcending their previous, more controlled encounters. Their relationship takes a new turn as they move forward, still with the question of marriage hanging in the air, but with a new - found physical and emotional closeness.
