Imogen Reese's world is turned upside down when the woman her husband Evan has always longed for, Lian Rivers, returns. Imogen, who has been living a seemingly comfortable life with Evan and the Hawthorne family, suddenly finds herself on the brink of losing everything.

The story begins with Imogen coming home to discover that her beloved swimming pool, with a mermaid statue modeled after her, has been destroyed. The matriarch of the family, with a triumphant smile, orders the workers to fill in the pool, claiming it clashes with her and will bring good fortune to the family. This act sets the stage for the growing hostility and disdain Imogen faces.
