This is a novel that focuses on the lives of the social Bottom Layer people and the darkness of human nature. The story revolves around the female protagonist, Lyka, who comes from a poor family. In order to change her family's difficult situation, she goes to work as a maid in the mansion of the Gustavo family. The male protagonist, Kiro, the son of the mansion's owner, is afflicted by a rare disease called satyriasis, which makes him unable to control his sexual impulses.
Lyka's family is extremely poor. Her father is seriously ill in bed and has a bad temper. Her younger brother, Dodong, is malnourished, and her younger sister, Datdat, is in poor health. In order to enable her family to live a better life, Lyka resolutely embarks on the journey to work in the mansion. Despite her mother's deep concern and her father's strong opposition, she sets off on this unknown journey with hopes for the future.
Along the way, Lyka endures hardships, constantly tormented by hunger and fatigue. After arriving at the mansion, she faints due to hunger. Unexpectedly, instead of blaming her, the mistress of the mansion and the housekeeper, Linda, show great concern for her. This makes Lyka feel a glimmer of warmth and fills her with anticipation for her future work.
However, this anticipation is soon shattered by cruel reality. When getting along with the other maids, Joday and Doday, Joday's sarcasm and meanness make Lyka very uncomfortable. And during a dinner delivery to Kiro, Lyka experiences a nightmare. Kiro hugs her from behind and violates her. Lyka struggles desperately but to no avail. During this process, she loses her virginity.
Devastated and filled with anger and despair, Lyka decides to expose Kiro's Evil deeds to the mistress and Linda. However, when she overhears a conversation between the mistress and Linda by chance, she discovers that they have long known about Kiro's behavior and intend to use money to silence her in order to protect Kiro. Lyka is plunged into deep despair and helplessness. She realizes that she seems to have fallen into an inescapable trap.
Just as she is at a loss, the mistress discovers her and asks if something has happened between her and Kiro. In order to keep this job and continue to provide for her family, Lyka, suppressing the pain and humiliation in her heart, chooses to lie. The mistress mistakenly thinks that Kiro's condition has improved and even invites a doctor to discuss a new treatment plan.
The doctor explains in detail the satyriasis that Kiro suffers from. This disease is caused by various factors, including personality disorders, addiction problems, and physical dysfunctions. Lyka's "lie" makes everyone think that there has been a turn for the better in Kiro's condition. The doctor also proposes a series of new treatment drugs, such as antidepressants, naltrexone, and mood stabilizers.
Lyka's heart is filled with contradictions and struggles. She hates Kiro for what he has done to her, yet also feels a bit of pity for his illness. She doesn't know what the future holds for her. Should she continue to work in this place full of painful memories, or should she summon the courage to leave and seek a new life? The story leaves a suspense here, also making readers deeply immersed in the thinking about human nature, fate, and social reality.
