Albina and Umberto are the leading female and male characters in *The Blind Wife*. In this novel, the female protagonist, Albina, is a blind woman who has endured great hardships in life. The male protagonist, Umberto, is a man driven by revenge and self - centered motives. *The Blind Wife* tells a story of a marriage filled with deception, betrayal, and heartbreak between Albina and Umberto.
Albina's life took a tragic turn when, right after graduating from college, a car accident claimed her father's life and left her blind. Her family's fortune was snatched away by relatives, and her mother was left shattered, suffering from intermittent mania. In her darkest hour, Umberto stepped in, offering to cure her mother's illness in exchange for her hand in marriage. Desperate to save her mother, Albina agreed.
However, their marriage was far from a happy union. From the start, Umberto's mother showed blatant dislike for Albina, constantly hurling insults at her over the phone, which Albina endured for three long years. The real shock came when Albina discovered that Umberto had married her solely to use her as a blood donor for his comatose ex - girlfriend, Yolanda. Umberto wrongly believed that Albina's father's drunk - driving had caused Yolanda to fall into a vegetative state, and thus, his marriage to Albina was a means of revenge.
Upon learning the truth, Albina was devastated and decided to divorce. But Umberto resisted, and during this difficult process, Albina faced further humiliation at the hands of Umberto's mother and Yolanda. They not only suspected her of stealing but also forced her to undress for an inspection. Eventually, Albina signed the divorce agreement and another demeaning agreement that prohibited her from ever speaking of her marriage to Umberto.
Alone and heartbroken, Albina left the house and struggled in the snow. She was filled with sorrow as she recalled the false hope she had placed in Umberto. Just when she seemed completely alone, Miguel, her family doctor, came to her rescue. His kindness offered a glimmer of hope in her otherwise bleak world. Meanwhile, when Umberto saw Albina with Miguel, he felt a strange sense of anger, but his attention was soon diverted back to Yolanda, who had fainted.
Albina's attempts to return to her mother were also met with heartbreak as her mother, still suffering from the trauma of the past, pushed her away. Left with no place to go, she was on the verge of complete despair until Miguel offered her a place to stay and a job opportunity.
