The story follows Valerie, a young woman who has just graduated at the top of her class. One summer day, Valerie and her family are invited to have lunch at the Smiths'. She dresses elegantly in her sage - green dress, excited but a bit nervous about the gathering. At the Smiths', she meets Andrew, a tall and attractive young man with brown hair. Andrew is immediately smitten with Valerie, and they start chatting. Valerie, though not a very social person, finds herself drawn to Andrew as well.

However, the lunch is disrupted by an argument between Valerie's sister Gwen and her ex - boyfriend Steven. After the lunch, Andrew seizes the opportunity to ask Valerie out on a date, and she is thrilled. On the day of the date, they go to a restaurant. During their walk to the restaurant, a man named Carson bumps into Valerie. Carson is a tall, broad - shouldered man with intimidating brown eyes. He is so taken by Valerie's beauty that he stares at her, much to her confusion. Andrew is angry at Carson for not apologizing and takes Valerie inside the restaurant.

Valerie and Andrew have a great time at the restaurant, but when it's time to leave, Valerie realizes her purse is missing. It turns out that Carson picked it up. He calls Valerie and tells her to meet him at Wendy's cafe the next day to get her purse back. When they meet, Carson shocks Valerie by saying "I want you" and "You're mine". Valerie is completely taken aback and doesn't know how to react. She manages to free herself from his grip and rushes home.

Back at home, Valerie is conflicted. She tries to tell her sister Carmen about the incident but is interrupted by Gwen. Meanwhile, Carson is determined to know more about Valerie. He tells his assistant Benson to find out everything about her because he has fallen deeply in love with her and wants her to be his.

Andrew then asks Valerie out on a movie date. Gwen helps Valerie choose an outfit. At the movies, Valerie mistakes a man for Carson, which makes Andrew confused. During the movie, Valerie can't concentrate because she keeps thinking about Carson's words. After the movie, Andrew wants to kiss Valerie and ask her to be his girlfriend but decides it's not the right time.

Just as Valerie returns home from the movie date, her family is waiting for her with a letter. The letter is from Carson, inviting her family to his mansion in three days to talk about marriage arrangements. Valerie is shocked, and her family demands answers, leaving her in a difficult situation as she tries to figure out who Carson is and what to do about this unexpected proposal.
