Catherine and Jack had a seven - year relationship. Jack was studying at Harvard, and Catherine, a college dropout, supported him financially. She believed they would get married, as Jack had promised. However, on the day they were supposed to reunite, Jack brutally rejected her at a restaurant. He scorned her for being a dropout and declared that he would never propose to her, leaving Catherine heartbroken and devastated.

Drunk and distraught, Catherine hit two dog - like animals with her car while driving. Unbeknownst to her, one of them was Xander's mate. Xander, a werewolf facing the threat of being dethroned by the council of were - elders because he was mateless, had just found his mate. But her death complicated his situation.

When Xander found Catherine passed out near the accident scene, he initially wanted to kill her. However, he came up with a plan. He decided to make Catherine his contract Luna. He would have her pose as his mate until he ascended the throne. In return, he promised to take care of her, see her through college, and make her financially stable. At first, Catherine vehemently refused, but Xander used the fact that she killed his mate as leverage, and she reluctantly agreed.

At a ball held by Xander, Catherine made her debut as his supposed mate. She was nervous but tried to fit in. However, Faye, a werewolf who had feelings for Xander and had rejected her own mate for him, was jealous and threatened Catherine. Faye told Catherine to reject Xander and stay away, or else she would make her suffer.

Catherine was so frightened and humiliated that she decided to cancel the contract. Xander tried to persuade her to stay. He promised to protect her from Faye and assured her that everything would be okay. He even kissed her, which made Catherine angry. But considering her dire financial situation and having no better options, she was torn.

Xander, on the other hand, was determined to keep Catherine safe and make sure his plan worked. He confronted Faye and threatened her severely, warning her not to harm Catherine. Faye reluctantly swore to back off, but secretly harbored hatred for Catherine, vowing to get revenge in the future.

As the story progresses, the relationship between Catherine and Xander becomes more complex. They have to face various challenges within the werewolf community while dealing with their own personal feelings and the secrets that surround them.
