Chapter 3 Victoria
Victoria stood in front of the mansion that looked like a fairytale castle, amazed and filled with a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. Led by the doorman, she walked into the courtyard. The smooth stone paths and the huge, magnificent fountain made her feel as if she were in a wonderland. For a moment, she was even impulsive enough to want to drink from the fountain, but fortunately, she came to her senses in time.
Looking at her shabby clothes, a sense of inferiority welled up in her. She doubted whether she could be qualified for the job. Entering the house, a strong Italian style hit her. Facing the expensive sofa, she was so nervous that she didn't know what to do with her hands and feet.
"Who are you? How did you get in here?" A deep and authoritative voice came. Victoria turned her head and saw a handsome man with deep eyes, bronze skin, and sexy lips. She wondered if this could be the employer.
"I'm Victoria Abbott, and I'm here to apply for the nanny position." She stammered and extended her hand. The man shook her hand and said, "I'm Sebastian."
"Follow me," Sebastian said as he turned around. Victoria followed him. When she tried to strike up a conversation along the way but was ignored, she felt extremely embarrassed.
They came to a door. Sebastian knocked on it, and an unhappy voice came from inside: "Come in."
"Capo," they entered the room. The luxurious chair was facing away from them, with smoke curling up. Sebastian introduced Victoria to the man in the chair in Italian. As the chair turned around, she was shocked to see the famous Alessandro Rossi.
Alessandro put out his cigarette and looked at her. "Take a seat, Miss ___?"
"Miss Abbott, Victoria Abbott," she quickly added, her voice trembling.
"Miss Abbott, how old are you?" he asked, looking at her closely.
"Twenty-three years old, sir," she replied softly.
"Hmm, twenty-three. Do you have any experience as a nanny?" he questioned skeptically.
Victoria explained that she used to help her neighbors take care of their children and also took care of customers' children when she worked at the mall. Although she wasn't a professional nanny, she really loved children and was confident that she could do the job well.
Alessandro got up and walked to the window, looking at the garden as he asked, "Suppose a two-month-old baby keeps crying and refuses to eat. What do you think is the problem and what would you do?"
"Maybe the baby is hungry and wants breast milk. Babies at this age are very fragile," she answered.
He turned around, his eyes lingering on her for a moment before asking, "Can you breastfeed my son?"
Victoria's eyes widened, and her face turned red as she stammered, "Sir, that's impossible. I don't have breast milk."
"Money is not an issue as long as you're willing to," he said impatiently.
"It's not about the money, sir. I really can't do it," she said, lowering her head in embarrassment.
Alessandro looked at her and said coldly, "Then you're not suitable for this job. You can leave."
"Sir, please!" Victoria was so anxious that her eyes became red. "I can learn to take care of the baby and feed him formula milk. I'm sure I can do it well."
"I've told you to leave," he said firmly.
Victoria held back her tears and stood up slowly. Just as her hand touched the doorknob, the door was pushed open from the outside, and Sebastian walked in with a crying baby in his arms.
"Capo," he said, looking nervous.
"Merda, non di nuovo." Mr. Rossi sighed in frustration. (Damn it, not again.)
Sebastian handed the baby to his father. Alessandro was at a loss about what to do. Victoria summoned up her courage and asked, "May I have a try?"
After looking her up and down, Alessandro handed the baby to her and said coldly, "Attento al mio erede, altrimenti ti faccio saltare il cervello." (Take good care of my heir, or else you'll be in trouble.)
Victoria took the baby, gently stroked his back, and walked towards the window. She hummed a little tune, rocked the baby gently, and pointed at the things in the garden. Gradually, the baby's crying subsided, and finally, he fell asleep.
"What's his name? Where's his room?" she asked softly.
"Follow me," Alessandro led her to a room on the right side of the corridor. She carefully put the sleeping baby into the cot. Turning around, she was about to leave.
"Stay," he said briefly.
"Sir, I really can't breastfeed him," she reminded him.
"You don't have to. Just take care of him like you did today. He seems to be quite attached to you," he said in a cold tone, but there was a hint of softness in his eyes.
"Then I'm willing to be his nanny," she said with a smile, though she didn't get a response.
"His name is Matteo. Remember that."
"Matteo, what a lovely name."
"Can you start working tomorrow?"
"Anytime is okay, sir."
"Tomorrow then."
"Okay, sir. I'll take my leave now," she said, preparing to leave.
"Wait, there's one more thing," his voice made her stop and turn around.
"I need you to live here and be a live-in nanny."
