In the vibrant city of Chicago, Deloise's world is a battleground of dreams and expectations. Living in a cozy three-room bungalow, Deloise discovers a monologue script online and, with a tripod set up to hold her phone, she prepares to bring it to life. Her transformation into character is immediate and intense as she faces the camera and begins, "Of course I know I'm pretty! The problem remains that you don't." She gestures menacingly, her expression one that could send chills down the spine of anyone watching. "It's all because of you!" she accuses with unwavering conviction. "You choose her over me. Again and again, time without number. You caused this, you should have chosen me!" Her voice rises with anger as the seconds pass. In a dramatic finale, she pretends to shoot herself and collapses limply onto the bed.
Just then, Esther, Deloise's mother, enters the room. At the sight of her daughter's seemingly lifeless form, her heart nearly stops before she realizes it's a setup. Deloise, seeing her mother's reaction, braces herself for the lecture she knows is coming. Esther, barely containing her agitation, demands to know what's going on. When Deloise tries to explain that she's practicing her acting skills with a new monologue she found, Esther cuts her off sharply. "Enough already! I don't want to hear it, Loise. You shouldn't be here wasting precious time. You should be preparing for your future in law school!" she declares firmly, her dissatisfaction clear.
Deloise pleads with her mother, explaining that her passion lies in acting and that's the career she wants to pursue. But Esther is unyielding. "I don't want to hear it! We have a plan, Deloise. The earlier you start pursuing it, the better for us. I am your mother and I know what's best for you. This is nothing but a hobby and no child of mine is taking that path," she states sternly. Deloise's face falls, her happiness evaporating in an instant. Esther tries to convince her that with her intelligence, she'll make a great lawyer and that's the life she should lead. But Deloise feels trapped, unable to explain how much her dream of becoming a world-renowned star means to her.
Feeling suffocated and caged, Deloise changes into a black jogger, T-shirt, and running shoes. She grabs her phone, plugs in her earphones, and bolts out of the house, seeking solace in her favorite park near her high school. As she runs, Eminem's "Am not afraid" blares in her ears, but she is very afraid. She wonders why her mother can't support her chosen path, why the world seems to be against her, and why her mother has such a deep-rooted aversion to the film industry.
At the park, Deloise sits on a log, trying to clear her mind by scrolling through a microblogging app. There, she stumbles upon an interview with the veteran actor Daniel Greenwood, who is returning to the entertainment scene after a two-year hiatus. His words about the industry making dreams a reality inspire Deloise, and she vows that one day she too will reach such heights.
Back at home, Esther's POV reveals her own fears and insecurities. She recalls when Deloise was eight and got picked to perform in a school drama. Esther's reaction was one of horror, and she forbade Deloise from participating, believing it would distract her from her studies. Now, seeing Deloise's continued interest in acting, she is determined to prevent her from making what she believes to be a mistake. Esther's past experiences with men have led her to be overprotective of Deloise, and she is terrified of her daughter following in her footsteps and facing the same hardships.
When Deloise returns home with groceries, she overhears her mother and her friend Karen discussing her future. Karen tries to encourage Esther to find a way to guide Deloise in the right direction, and Esther feels a glimmer of hope that she can still convince Deloise to pursue law.
Deloise confides in her friend Ann about the tension with her mother. Ann points out that while Deloise is talented, she needs more than just her mother's support to succeed in acting. She needs to take practical steps to make her dreams a reality. Later, Deloise discovers a scholarship opportunity at the prestigious Royal Arts Academy in New York on the microblogging app. Despite the slim chances of being selected, she decides to apply, determined not to let this opportunity pass her by.
On Esther's birthday, Deloise tries to make amends with her mother. She brings her a chocolate cake and sings her awake, and they share a heartfelt moment. However, Esther is still anxious about revealing the truth to Deloise later that night.
At the Royal Arts Academy, the director, Mr. Austin, welcomes the influential Daniel Greenwood. Mr. Greenwood is looking for fresh talent for a production and has offered a fully funded scholarship for the female lead role. The academy has received many applications, but Mr. Greenwood is determined to find the perfect candidate.
As the evening unfolds, Deloise sets a beautiful table for dinner with her mother. They enjoy the meal, but the atmosphere changes when Esther finally reveals the envelope she's been hiding. Deloise's sense of dread grows as she anticipates what's inside, and the stage is set for a major confrontation that will change the course of their relationship and Deloise's future. Will Deloise be able to pursue her acting dreams, or will Esther's plans prevail? Find out in this gripping tale of family, passion, and the pursuit of dreams.
