Taryn Warner wakes up in a strange, luxurious cave-like room and realizes she's been drugged and kidnapped by Trey Coleman, an alpha with a fierce reputation. Trey reveals that his beta and head enforcer brought her there as a means to deal with Roscoe Weston, who owes him something. Taryn is in a difficult situation as Roscoe is determined to mate with her, which she vehemently opposes due to his controlling nature and rumored penchant for inflicting pain on women. She's been trying to escape this mating but has faced obstacles as her father wants the alliance with Roscoe and her pack alpha is her father, leaving her with few options.

Trey proposes a deal to Taryn: she can join his pack and become his mate until a battle with his uncle's pack is over. His father passed away, and his uncle, now alpha, wants to unite the two packs with himself in charge. Trey needs alliances to even the odds in the upcoming battle. He explains that the mating with him doesn't have to be permanent, just a public display to gain her father's alliances. Taryn is hesitant as she values loyalty and doesn't want to disrespect the memory of her childhood mate Joey, but she also sees this as a chance to escape Roscoe. They discuss the difficulties of faking a mating bond, but Trey believes they can manage it by being publicly seen to "discover" each other at a shifter club. Taryn's wolf is surprisingly receptive to Trey, which complicates her decision further as she contemplates whether to accept this deal that could change her life.
